How Do I Get Support to Quit?

Connecting with the right support is important for a successful quit. Get some ideas for who can help you.

Connecting with the right support to quit and stay quit can often make or break a quit attempt. It is the same with any challenging task – it really helps to have someone to lean on when times get tough. Someone to ask questions (even in the middle of the night). Someone to celebrate with when you're feeling proud! Someone who gets what you're going through, ups and downs and in-betweens.

Going for a hike is less lonely and more fun when you’ve got a buddy or two. Plus, you’re less likely to trip—and if you do, there’s someone there to help you get back up.

Can’t I just quit alone? Why do I need support to quit?

  • Family and friends can be a huge help when you're quitting — or they can be triggers.
  • Think about the people you know who will support you at home and work. Think about which people won't. Chances are, you won't be able to avoid the people who aren't supportive, so prepare yourself when you know you're going to be around them.
